Awesome Emoji Gifts

The Birth Of Emojis

These emoji gifts are born from the ‘emotional icon’. Or as we call them, emojis. They’re pictorial representations of our facial expressions that show how we’re feeling. Thousands of years ago, us homo sapiens would paint pictographics on the walls of caves. It was how we communicated. But once we figured out how to write, we stopped using pictographics and began using words. Isn’t it crazy we’re back where we started??? After thousands of years we’re back using pictographs to communicate. Although, we paint them in our cell phone messages and not on cave walls.

However, Western countries didn’t immediately begin using pictographic type emojis. We used letters and punctuation characters to represent facial expressions. It was a combination of words and pictographics. It was actually the Japanese who first used the pure pictographic emojis. They created the kaomoji, which didn’t require the pictographics to be tilted sideways like the Western emojis. Emojis have done more than create a new type of communication. They’re destroying an old one. Laughing face emojis and shocked face emojis have been replacing expressions like LOL and OMG. Emojis, while similar to cave paintings, are really an entirely new type of language. They’re a way to communicate via messaging and convey emotional nuance in short utterances.

The Introduction Of The Emoji

Who created emojis? Who introduced them first? It’s a hotly debated topic that could be well represented by some angry face emojis. From online forums to coffee shops, people argue the case for former presidents to computer nerds. The New York Times published an interesting transcript. It was written by former U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Here are the contentious 25 characters: "(applause and laughter ;)" Is that a winky face? Or a typo? It’s still up for debate.

Much later, others explicitly attempted to bring in text-based facial expressions into our lexicon. Some failed. In 1935, Alan Gregg wrote an article for the Harvard Lampoon where he suggested the use of emojis. He proposed (-) for a smile, (--) for laughter (more teeth showing), (#) for a frown, (*) for winking, and (#) for "intense interest, attention, and incredulity". It was a nice try, but as we know by our current emojis, his ideas never caught on. He could’ve used an emoji gift to cheer himself up.

But there was one man who found success. His name was Scott Fahlman and he was from the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University. In September of 1982, he made the following proposal:

I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:
:-)
Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark
things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use
:-(

He is believed to be the first person to use these emojis. And as you’re surely familiar with them, you know his proposal was successful. He deserved some emoji gifts in congratulations.
